Square Root

√x.

How this calculator works

Returns the principal (non-negative) square root of a non-negative real number.

Uses IEEE-754 double precision, accurate to about 15 significant digits.

Every positive number technically has two square roots, one positive and one negative, but 'the' square root by convention refers to the positive (principal) one — which is what this tool returns.

Example

√2 ≈ 1.41421356.

Frequently asked questions

What about negative numbers?

Square roots of negatives are complex numbers (imaginary unit i). This tool only handles reals.

How to estimate √ without a calculator?

Find the nearest perfect squares. √50 is between √49 (7) and √64 (8), closer to 7.

Is √2 a repeating decimal?

No — it's irrational, meaning its decimal expansion goes on forever without repeating. This calculator shows it rounded to double-precision accuracy, not the exact infinite value.
